Course Goals and Objectives:

Students who work hard in MTEC-310 will:

  • Acquire a strong foundation in concepts, practices and perspectives relevant to professional-level MIDI Programming.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with a broad range of current, industry-standard, MIDI production tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to further educate themselves about new software tools.
  • Demonstrate personal development in acquiring professional-level MIDI sequencing techniques and using these in composing music pieces.
  • Make sophisticated critical judgments in mixing, processing and arranging MIDI-based music projects.
  • Present creative works via participation in an electronic music performance showcase.
  • Create an online e-portfolio to showcase, and reflect upon, their work.

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate their ability to:

  • Identify and analyze best practices in MIDI programming from recordings and imitate these using a variety of programming methods.
  • Identify and use advanced programming techniques in layering, mixing and sequencing.
  • Sequence in Apple's Logic Pro and Digidesign's Pro Tools.
  • Sequence in Reason using both Linear and Matrix sequencers.
  • Use Logic Pro's and Pro Tools's audio capbilities to mix and process sequenced MIDI tracks.
  • Use Propellerhead's Reason's Audio real-time audio capabilities to mix and process sequenced MIDI tracks.
  • Interface Reason to Pro Tools and Logic.
  • Use the virtual synthesizers found in Logic and Reason and explore their preset sound libraries.
  • Create ambient soundscapes for an on-campus student art installation.
  • Create a variety of dance-oriented rhythmic tracks in different musical styles.
  • Incorporate a variety of techniques learned in the course within their own musical compositions and arrangements.
