Submission Guidelines for Papers:

A paper should demonstrate your ability to research and learn an area of music technology, and communicate your ideas effectively to others. Don't just parrot back marketing jargon. Write as though you are reporting your findings to an employer, client or colleague. In other words, try to cut through the marketing hyperbole and think critically about questionable claims. Be sure to discuss any claims you feel are misleading or unsupported.

Use margins that are exactly one inch wide, with a 12-point serif font (such as "Times") for body text. (i.e., do not try to pad the length of your paper with extra "white space" or large print. My vision is fine!) Double-space your text so that I may mark it with editorial comments on your written content or writing mechanics. Assume, if you are asked to write a five-page paper, that you are writing five pages, double-spaced (i.e., equivalent to two-and-a-half pages if they were single-spaced), plus an additional page of sources (see below). The Learning Center can assist you with these requirements and with general writing help.

Include a Bibliography with at least four original sources. Sources can include:

  • Manufacturer's website (required!)
  • Manufacturer's brochure or operator's manual
  • Retailer's website or catalog
  • Interview with a salesperson or frequent user
  • Product review in a trade magazine (Mix, EQ, Electronic Musician, etc.)

Submit each paper in both its printed form (for my review) and electronic form, as a MS Word document (.doc) file. This file will be submitted to Turnitin.com to deter others from plagiarizing your original work.
