Individual Student Lab Time:

Students in this course will have some practice assignments in Studio E using the multitrack recording studio rack. For these assignments, reserved weekly time slots will be made available.

Students in this course will also be using Pro Tools software for listening and mixing assignments; much of this lab work can be completed in our 16-station Electronic Music Lab (a.k.a. Studio C) when the lab is free. There are additional Pro Tools stations in Studio E (our classroom). Lab stations are available on a first-come, first-served basis—you will not have an assigned time.

It is essential that you back up your work after each mixing session. (We will discuss strategies for doing so in class.) Make sure you come prepared with the right materials to save your work during class and individual lab time. Do not rely on your computer's hard drive to archive your work because:

  • You may not be able to access the same computer if it is in use by another student.
  • You may not be able to access the same computer if the station is being repaired.
  • The computer's hard drive may (read: "will") fail, preventing you from ever opening the file.
  • Your file(s) may become corrupted, preventing you from using it.
  • There could be a flood or fire in the facility (don't laugh—this has happened!)

Absolutely no consideration will be given to lost or missing work!

In the event your work is lost, you will be required to repeat the project. The good news is that projects tend to go much quicker the second time around. And at least you will have learned a valuable lesson without having to learn it "on the job." 8^)
