Students who take MTEC-101 will:

  • Acquire a strong foundation in the concepts, practices and perspectives relevant to audio engineering.
  • Develop sophisticated critical judgments about sound, both in their written work and lab projects.
  • Use quantitative methods to evaluate sound and audio signals.
  • Express audio engineering concepts and ideas using the sophisticated terminology of audio practitioners.
  • Develop an ability to further educate themselves in this discipline.

At the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of the assistant audio engineer and other recording studio personnel.
  • Know the main types of recording facilities and the rooms within them.
  • Distinguish between acoustic properties of sound and psycho-acoustic perceptions of sound.
  • Use appropriate units of measurement when measuring the properties of sound.
  • Develop critical listening skills to recognize sounds in and out of context.
  • Evaluate six perceptions of sound by ear.
  • Develop a deeper awareness and understanding of how sound is affected by its environment.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of fundamental acoustic principles necessary for the above tasks.
