Course Goals and Objectives:
Students who take MTEC-101 will:
- Acquire a strong foundation in the concepts, practices and perspectives relevant to audio engineering.
- Develop sophisticated critical judgments about sound, both in their written work and lab projects.
- Use quantitative methods to evaluate sound and audio signals.
- Express audio engineering concepts and ideas using the sophisticated terminology of audio practitioners.
- Develop an ability to further educate themselves in this discipline.
At the completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of the assistant audio engineer and other recording studio personnel.
- Know the main types of recording facilities and the rooms within them.
- Distinguish between acoustic properties of sound and psycho-acoustic perceptions of sound.
- Use appropriate units of measurement when measuring the properties of sound.
- Develop critical listening skills to recognize sounds in and out of context.
- Evaluate six perceptions of sound by ear.
- Develop a deeper awareness and understanding of how sound is affected by its environment.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of fundamental acoustic principles necessary for the above tasks.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the signal flow and interconnection of major components in an audio production system.
- Know the four basic functions of the recording console.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the component sections of a recording console and how they interact.
- Use Digidesign's Pro Tools hardware and software to playback lab exercises.
